Self-defence in Norway

Self-defence courses are short and practical, often six to ten weeks, and are about getting away rather than winning a fight. Many clubs run separate courses for women, and those go quickly.

What a typical course looks like

Self-defence courses usually run six to ten weeks on fixed evenings. The content is distance, voice, escaping grabs and simple strikes. It resembles preparedness more than it resembles a martial art. Many clubs run separate courses for women, and those get full fast.

What a course actually gives you

A ten-week course does not make you a martial artist, but it changes how you stand, where you look and what you do in the first two seconds. To build on it, grappling or a striking sport is the next step. Most courses are run by a club that offers both anyway.

How long is a self-defence course?

Typically six to ten weeks, one evening a week. Many clubs repeat the course several times a year.

Are there women-only courses?

Yes. It is one of the most common things Norwegian martial arts clubs run, and the places go fast. Check the club's page, or message them and ask when the next course starts.

Is one course enough?

A course gives you the first seconds: distance, voice and escapes. For it to hold up under pressure you need to keep training something with resistance in it.
