Submission grappling, often called submission wrestling, is fighting without strikes, where you force a tap with a choke or a joint lock. It looks like no-gi jiu-jitsu, but the competition rules are different and takedowns count for more.

What an ordinary class looks like
Submission grappling blends wrestling takedowns with chokes and joint locks from jiu-jitsu. Classes usually spend more time standing than a pure BJJ class, and sparring runs in longer rounds without points.
Who it suits
It is the most common entry point for people who want to train fighting without being hit in the head, and the base for the grappling half of MMA. With a wrestling or judo background you will recognise a lot on day one.

Questions about Submission grappling
Is submission grappling the same as no-gi?
Almost. Both are trained without a uniform, but grappling competitions use their own rule sets where takedowns and leg locks count differently than in IBJJF no-gi.
Do I need a uniform?
No. A rash guard and shorts are enough, which makes grappling the cheapest martial art to try.
Is it suitable for complete beginners?
Yes. No strikes means you can train against full resistance within your first month, without the risk that comes with striking sparring.
