Karate in Norway

Karate is a Japanese striking art with a strong emphasis on form, precision and grading. Norwegian karate clubs mostly sit under the national martial arts federation, and often run the widest children's programme in town.

94 clubs across 66 Norwegian towns have karate on the schedule. All of them say so on their own pages — none are inferred. The clubs that publish a price sit at 350–2950 kr a month.

About the sport: Karate

What an ordinary class looks like

Kihon (basics in lines), kata (forms) and kumite (sparring) are the three parts, and a class usually contains some of each. Styles such as Shotokan, Kyokushin and Wado-ryu weight them differently, so ask the club which style it trains.

Children and grading

Karate often has the broadest children's programme in town, with clear belt grades that give small, frequent goals. Clubs mostly sit under the national martial arts federation, and the uniform typically costs 400 to 800 kroner through the club.

Addresses and prices are read automatically off the clubs' websites, and the organisation number is matched automatically against the Norwegian company register. All of it may be wrong, outdated, for a different class (kids, student, family), or for a different legal entity than the one running the training. The price is usually an adult membership, excluding joining fees and licences. If something here is wrong, tell us and we will fix it.

Questions about Karate

Which karate style should I choose?

The one trained nearest you. Shotokan is the most widespread in Norway, Kyokushin is harder contact, and the differences matter little in your first two years.

How long does a black belt in karate take?

Four to six years with steady training and gradings along the way. Belts come more often than in BJJ, and each grading is a scheduled exam.

Is there much contact in karate?

In most Norwegian clubs kumite is semi-contact with protective gear, and children's classes have no contact to the head. Kyokushin is the exception, with full contact to the body.
