No-gi in Norway

No-gi is Brazilian jiu-jitsu without the uniform, in shorts and a rash guard. With no cloth to hold on to everything moves faster, and the grips look more like wrestling and submission grappling. Most BJJ clubs run both.

19 clubs across 14 Norwegian towns have no-gi on the schedule. All of them say so on their own pages — none are inferred. The clubs that publish a price sit at 299–2000 kr a month.

About the sport: No-gi

What an ordinary class looks like

The same shape as gi training, but with no cloth to hold everything moves faster, and the grips are collar ties, underhooks and leg entanglements instead of lapels and sleeves. Many clubs put no-gi on the same evenings as BJJ, so one membership covers both.

What you need

A rash guard and shorts without pockets or zips. That is the entire kit list. It makes no-gi the cheapest way into grappling: no uniform to buy, and the training clothes you already own probably work.

Addresses and prices are read automatically off the clubs' websites, and the organisation number is matched automatically against the Norwegian company register. All of it may be wrong, outdated, for a different class (kids, student, family), or for a different legal entity than the one running the training. The price is usually an adult membership, excluding joining fees and licences. If something here is wrong, tell us and we will fix it.

Questions about No-gi

Should I start in the gi or no-gi?

It matters less than people claim. The gi teaches patience and detail, no-gi teaches pace. Start with whichever the club runs on the evenings you can make.

What do I wear?

A rash guard and shorts without pockets or zippers. A loose t-shirt works for the first class but tears quickly.

Are leg locks dangerous?

They are a normal part of no-gi and safe when both partners tap early. Clubs introduce them gradually, and beginners are usually told to tap the moment they feel pressure on the knee.
